NRSWA Training Operatives

NRSWA (New Roads & Streetworks for Operatives) 5 Days

Qualification – City & Guild’s New Roads and Streetworks Act (1991) Certificate / Card.

The New Roads and Street Works Act requires that anyone who executes, works for, or on behalf of a utility company, is qualified for the activities being carried out. Any street works site must have at least one qualified operative on site at all times during works, and the site must have a qualified supervisor appointed to the site who can oversee the works.

The supervisor need not be on site at all times, but must be able to adequately carry out the role. The supervisor qualification does not replace or overrule the operative qualification and one person cannot cover both roles at the same time.

The aim of this course is to give people at any level, in any sector, a grounding in the essentials of health and safety.  It focuses on why health and safety is important and how individuals can make a real difference to the wellbeing of themselves and others.  The course is also an ideal means of providing health and safety induction training for new employees in an organisation.

Who Should Attend?

Designed for operatives who physically carry out the work on the roadways and highways. Courses vary in their combination of the units to provide delegates with their skills and knowledge to perform duties in accordance with the Street Works Act 1991.

 

Course Objectives

At the end of the course delegates will be aware of: –

 

Training and assessment process for a Streetworks Operative under this City & Guilds 6156 scheme.

Health and Safety legislation and their obligations under this Act.

Safe working practices and methods.

Carry out Streetworks to the standards set down in the Act.

Use hand and power tools for the purpose of such works, including Portable Traffic Signal Systems.

Read and understand site plans for the purpose of identifying underground / overhead apparatus.

Use locating equipment for the purpose of detecting underground apparatus.

Set up a site to protect workers and members of the public.

 

Course Content

Unit 1 Location and Avoidance of Underground Services.
Unit 2 Signing, Lighting & Guarding.
Unit 3 Excavation in the Highway.
Unit 4 Reinstatement & Compaction of Backfill Materials.
Unit 5 Reinstatement & Compaction of Sub-base and Road- base in Non-Bituminous Materials.
Unit 6 Re-instatement in Cold-Lay Non-Bituminous Materials.
Unit 7 Re-instatement in Hot-Lay Bituminous Materials.
Unit 8 Re-instatement in Concrete Slabs.
Unit 9 Re-instatement in Modular Surfaces and Concrete Footways.

Assessment

Operative candidates are assessed carrying out practical tasks for each unit. Supervisor candidate assessments comprise of knowledge questions for each unit followed by observation of operatives carrying out various tasks.

Delegates must attend all of the days, in accordance with the C&G course programme, to achieve the necessary learning objectives to qualify for the qualification.

Note – Not all courses will include all the same units. Please check on the individual course for details of the taught units.
